The Bio-Rad Gene Pulser Xcell Electroporation System is a modular, universal instrument designed for transfecting eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, including mammalian cells, primary and stem cells, T cells, bacteria, and fungi.
- Voltage Range: Fully adjustable from 10 to 3,000 V
- Low Voltage Range: 10 to 500 V (adjustable in 1 V increments)
- High Voltage Range: 500 to 3,000 V (adjustable in 10 V increments)
- Internal Capacitance Range: 10 to 50 µF (adjustable in 1 µF increments)
- Internal Parallel Resistance Range: 50 to 1,000 Ω (adjustable in 50 Ω increments)
- Waveform Delivery: Supports both exponential decay and square wave profiles.
- Safety & Protection: Features PulseTrac circuitry and arc-protection (with a response time of <10 µs) to prevent sample loss and device damage.
- Cuvette Compatibility: Supports 0.1 cm, 0.2 cm, and 0.4 cm electroporation cuvettes using the ShockPod chamber.
- Protocol Storage & Interface: Features an internal memory database that stores up to 144 user-defined custom programs or records data from the last 100 experiments.

System Components:
- Main Unit: Provides the base control interface, digital display, numerical keypad, and core voltage generation.
- Capacitance Extender (CE) Module: Contains low-voltage capacitors (functional range of 25–3,275 µF) used mainly for mammalian cells and plant protoplasts.
- Pulse Controller (PC) Module: Houses resistors (50–1,000 Ω) required for high-voltage pulses and high-resistance samples typical of bacteria and fungi.
- ShockPod Cuvette Chamber: The green and white sample chamber that holds 0.1 cm, 0.2 cm, or 0.4 cm electroporation cuvettes.
